Our Apple "Taste-Off"

Holding our first-ever Apple Taste-Off at the 2009 Silver Lake Sand Dunes Apple & BBQ Cook-off Festival, we sought to settle the question of which apple tastes the best.

Our "Parents vs. Child Apple Taste-Off" pitted two popular breeds of apples with a relatively new offspring of the two. The contestants were the new SweeTango® apple (the "child"), Zestar!™, and Honeycrisp™.

The undisputed winner was the SweeTango® apple as the runaway favorite. Out of 477 votes cast, the clear majority of tasters chose the SweeTango® apple over both of its parents. Below are the official Taste-Off results.

*To give Honeycrisp™ its due, they were on the early side of maturity (our cold summer has delayed ripening), so they are not yet fully flavored.

Maybe we'll have a normal summer next year, and do another taste-off then! Thanks to all of you who took the time to sample all three apples and cast your vote for your favorite!  What a fun day!

We are now sold out of SweeTango® apples, but you can stop by the market to get your own taste of the new SweeTango® apple next year, and see if you agree with the majority. Don't miss them, though, as they are only available for a limited time and in limited quantities!
